I
painted this work while I was living in Spain, in exchange for
some Spanish lessons.
The
Argentinian woman who commissioned it, wanted me to base the painting
on some illustrations she had found in an instructional book about
lovemaking. Placing the figures in the local wintery mountains
seemed more romantic and dramatic than the usual boudoir setting.
I had written a song a few years earlier called "Love Is
A Thorn On A Spanish Rose". The rose became part of the painting
and the final title.
